Esophageal Manometry

Esophageal Manometry

Manometry is a test that measures the strength and coordination of muscles in your food pipe (esophagus) or the anal and rectal area. At Sanghamitra GI Lab, we offer two types of manometry tests to help identify specific GI motility disorders.

🥣 Esophageal Manometry – For Swallowing Problems

Why Is It Done?

This test is useful if you have:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Chest pain not related to the heart
  • Suspected achalasia or esophageal spasm
  • Evaluation before anti-reflux surgery (like fundoplication)
🛠️ How Is It Done?
  1. A thin, flexible tube is passed gently through your nose into the esophagus
  2. You will be asked to swallow small sips of water
  3. The tube measures pressure and coordination of esophageal muscles as you swallow

⏱️ Takes around 20–30 minutes and is done without sedation
You may feel mild discomfort or gagging, but it’s safe and well-tolerated.

📊 What It Tells Us:
  • How well your food pipe pushes food down
  • If the lower esophageal valve opens/relaxes properly
  • Helps diagnose achalasia, spasm, scleroderma, or other motility issues

✅ Before the Test:

Esophageal Manometry
  • Fast for 4–6 hours
  • Stop acid-reducing meds (if instructed)
  • Inform about nose block or allergy
Anorectal Manometry
  • Take prescribed enema (if advised)
  • Use the toilet before the test
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes

🧠 Why It Matters:

These tests help avoid unnecessary treatments by pinpointing the exact problem. They are especially important when planning procedures like:

  • POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy)
  • Sphincterotomy
  • Biofeedback therapy for constipation or incontinence
