Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

What is Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)?

A combination of endoscopy and ultrasound from inside your body

EUS uses a flexible tube with an ultrasound probe at its tip, introduced through the mouth or rectum, to generate high-resolution images of internal organs. Unlike external scans, EUS provides closer and clearer views of the digestive tract and nearby structures.

It helps examine:

  • ๐Ÿ” Pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, liver
  • ๐Ÿ” Digestive tract layers: esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum
  • ๐Ÿ” Lymph nodes, nearby masses, chest (mediastinum)
  • ๐Ÿ” Left kidney and adrenal glands
  • ๐Ÿ” Enables tissue sampling using a fine needle

When and Why Do We Use EUS?

To find causes, confirm diagnoses, and guide treatment
  • Unexplained upper abdominal pain
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Chronic pancreatitis diagnosis
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Bile duct block with jaundice
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Evaluation of pancreatic cysts or tumors
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Cancer staging (GI, pancreas, rectum)
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Subepithelial lesion investigation
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Precise biopsy via fine-needle aspiration

EUS Can Also Treat Certain Conditions

Beyond diagnosis โ€“ Minimally invasive therapies guided by ultrasound
  • ๐ŸŸข Pancreatic fluid collection drainage
  • ๐ŸŸข Gallbladder or bile duct drainage (if ERCP not feasible)
  • ๐ŸŸข Celiac plexus neurolysis for pain relief in cancer
  • ๐ŸŸข Internal access creation for drainage procedures
  • ๐ŸŸข Injection therapies directly into specific masses

How is the Procedure Done?

Safe, effective, and usually done as day-care
  • ๐Ÿ›Œ Sedation or anesthesia provided
  • ๐Ÿงช Scope passed through mouth or rectum
  • ๐Ÿ“ก Real-time ultrasound imaging used to guide the procedure
  • ๐Ÿงซ Biopsy or therapy performed if needed
  • โฑ๏ธ Time: 30โ€“60 minutes
  • ๐Ÿฅ Day-care basis; discharge same day
After the Procedure
  • โœ… Most patients go home the same day
  • โœ… Mild throat discomfort or bloating may occur
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Results discussed at follow-up (if biopsy taken)
  • โš ๏ธ Rare risks: Bleeding, infection, mild pancreatitis
